DR.J'S TOUR OF WISCONSIN'S RIVER VALLEYS!  June 15-21

PORTAGE TO MAUSTON, TOMAH, SPARTA, & REEDSBURG. AN OPPORTUNITY TO CYCLE WISCONSIN'S MOST SCENIC RIVER VALLEYS, WITH TRAFFIC FREE BACK ROADS AND AN OPTION TO CANOE THE BLACK RIVER. If you have ever wondered where tour Directors cycle when they are not putting on rides for you, here's your chance to find out. Dr. J. has been enjoying this area for many seasons and has connected several routes of past PAW weekend tours to create a full week of scenic cycling. The entire week is routed over a charming and rustic network of backroads with an opportunity to take in the additional beauty of the Elroy Sparta Trail if one desires.

Optional time has been set aside to canoe the calm, but scenic Black River and have an outstanding dinner at the Riverside Inn at the end of the downstream paddle.

This is a week of memorable and scenic cycling, designed to exceed Pedal Across Wisconsin Standards of providing cyclists with an outstanding week on wheels at a cost far below national averages.
Registration fee of $594.00 includes:
Six nights motel.
Marked roads, maps & "Q" sheets.
 Emergency support.
Three dinners and four continental breakfasts.(4th dinner w/canoe sign up.)

Check in will be held again later in the day, and briefly Sunday morning before the ride leaves

Sunday, June 15th.....Portage to Mauston..........52 miles.
Throw your bag on the truck and get on your bike. No bus-no box-no wait. Our loop route begins and ends right here. Easy riding over rustic, traffic free roads starts us on our journey. If you are worried that the rest of the week won't be this good then you haven't been on PAW before.

There will be food stops set up for you 18 miles out and quaint towns to stop for lunch. PAW Happy Hour before dinner at Best Western Oasis Inn in Mauston where we stay overnight.

Monday, June 16th..........Mauston to Tomah.........55 miles.
We set off in search of wildlife refuges, cranberry bogs, and good times, all of which we expect to find. All roads lead to Tomah and Holiday Inn where we will spend the night. In Tomah you can visit a cheese plant that also prides itself on its ice cream, fudge, jams, and mustard. You can also find shops selling Amish made wares and some great baked goods and gifts at Burnstad's European Village, voted Wisconsin's most outstanding specialty shop. Sounds like one night might not be enough.......

Tuesday, June 17th.....Tomah to Sparta.......48 miles via road/ 38 road + path.
Finish the road route with a great mile long downhill into Norwalk, then choose path or road to Sparta. Roadies will be rewarded with two more mile + downhills and lots of car free roads.

If you choose the path be sure to bring a flashlight for the walk through the tunnels, an experience you will long remember. In Sparta you will want to visit the Deke Slayton Space and Bike Museum and the Historical Museum downstairs. You will also want to check out the Amish shops and antique spots in historic downtown where you can also take a guided walking tour. Overnight at Country Inn.

Wednesday, June 18th..........Morning Bike Ride......Afternoon Canoe trip.
While the day is yours, we have planned a morning ride followed by an optional sign up afternoon canoe trip on the Black River. A bus will take us to the launch area and our destination is the canoe base where we will have dinner at the Riverside Inn. The Black River is calm and shallow, but scenic, with areas of steep cliffs and many sandbars on which to stop and snack and visit. Changing area provided so to have dinner in dry clothes. Bus after dinner to Country Inn.

Thursday, June 19th.......Sparta to Reedsburg.......59 all path/ 65 all road.
Riders can choose the trail, road, or combine as switch points will be designated. Whichever your choice may be you are assured of a most scenic ride to remember. When you arrive at Voyager Inn, our home for the next two nights, be sure to see the Norman Rockwell exhibit now housed at the Voyager. You also might want to stand on the 90th meridian and set your watch to exactly noon when the sun reaches a 90 degree angle over Reedsburg. It's not far from the site where David C. Reed built a grist mill on the river, hence the name "Reedsburg."

In the late 1800's most of downtown was destroyed by fire and most of the buildings that replaced them are still there. Dinner tonight at Voyager Inn.

Friday, June 20th.......Mirror Lake State Park & Mid Continent Railway Museum

At North Freedom and return to Reedsburg Voyager Inn. Loops of 40 & 50 miles.

Swim, shop, rest, eat, sleep, or cycle your choice of scenic routes to points of interest. Even if you are not a railroad fan the round trip bike ride is worth your while. You can take a ride on a train from the old days or brouse the museum. experience how the combination of bikes and trains can add to your fun.

Saturday, June 21st.....Reedsburg to Portage.......38 miles.
We know you won't be ready for this trip to end, but if it must, then this is the perfect route to finish on. You will have a chance to visit the International Crane Society and get a close up look at these rare birds. And also to stop at the Aldo Leopold Foundation to visit America's latest green building and learn about how their ideas for the future will make our world better. As our route continues East along the Wisconsin River you will be treated to some memorable views from the top of the levee, just a very short walk above road level. The route finishes where it began a week ago at the Best Western just around the corner from where you parked.

Share experiences with old friends and new at post ride happy hour and at dinner as we dine in elegance at rustic Holiday resort. Overnight at Comfort Inn and Holiday Inn of Rhinelander. Dinner bus leaves from both.

Monday, August 4th
TEE FOR LUNCH  60 MILES
We wind our way West and North, thru the woods and between the lakes into a never-never land where the deer feed on chocolate plants and cyclists always have tailwinds. Of course we have a destination.....who among us could have guessed that it's lunch at Pine Hills Golf Club? They have fired up the grill extra early just for us. Then it's on to Lake Tomahawk and our home away from home, Eagle River. A very nice property acquired by Days Inn will host us through Thursday.Happy Hour before dinner at Riverstone, the finest in the Northwoods, and you can bet Cindy has cooked up something special for PAW.

Tuesday, August 5th
0 TO 60 IN TEN HOURS (OR LESS)
Swim, sleep, shop, canoe, or cycle through beautiful Northwoods country. Click your derailleur three times. Yes, Dorothy, this must be bicycle heaven!!

Those who ride will be rewarded with a day to remember. There's bound to be Eagles soaring above the food stop on the lake at Phelps and again to the North where we discover the source of the Wisconsin River. Crossing the Michigan state line we head for Land 'O Lakes in search of better butter, but settle for a little used blacktop bike path tucked away in the woods. Our route takes us past lakes called home by loons and a rustic store in the woods called home by ice cream lovers. Thoughts of PAW happy hour propel us south.

Wednesday, August 6th
STAR LAKE--BOULDER JUNCTION LOOP  40--60, YOUR CHOICE.
Yet another photo-op loop thru bicycle heaven that you won't want to miss. While there is always an opportunity to cut your miles, we predict that on a day like this you won't want to turn back. The Rest stop on the lake is an ideal half way point for 40 milers or a great place to gather a bit more energy to go all the way to Boulder Junction for lunch. Eventually, thoughts of dinner again at Riverstone will bend your handlebars to the Southeast. But be warned, the last time we used this route ten people mailed in their job resignations from the Boulder Junction Post Office. And ten more called grandchildren to tell them they were sorry, but they would not be coming home for awhile. Several more made stops at real estate offices. You got it......this ain't Kansas, Dorothy............

Thursday, August 7th
NICOLET FOREST,  FRANKLIN LAKE BEACH, ROAD X & THE FAMOUS BOAT LIFT......45 or 63 MILES.
This is one of the most scenic loops of the week newly arranged so everyone can see Nicolet Forest without riding more miles than they would care to. The beach in the forest makes a perfect destination no matter which route you take. The stone shelter with dual fireplaces and the sand beach must have been put there just for PAW riders. This must be downtown bicycle heaven and your Tour Director sees problems ahead getting people to head back to Eagle River. Perhaps a recruitment of cycletroopers to find & fetch Bubha to set up happy hour will coax us back.

Friday, August 8th
EAGLE RIVER TO  TOMAHAWK- 60 MILES
Another photo-op ride as we head south. Our new route to Tomahawk will go through Rhinelander where you have already discovered the best ice cream stop on the tour. It's open 24 hours, so any time is a good time to be there. Dinner tonight at the Tomahawk Comfort Inn. Shuttle provided from Super Eight for those assigned there after Comfort Inn filled.

Saturday, August 9th
TOMAHAWK TO MERRILL   35 MILES
The week may come to an end, but remember, PAW rides never end as they go on forever in our memories. Your car (frown) and end of the ride showers and snacks (smile) await in Merrill. The sign-up line for next years trip forms to the right.

Note: exact miles and routes depend on road conditions for the 2008 season. Also, the opening of any new bakery or ice cream shop & how far out of the way it is.
