Wisconsin’s original
and longest running Northwoods loop tour*, since 1989…from Merrill
to Eagle River, Nicolet National Forest, and the largest fresh-water
chain of lakes in the world.
A full week of rustic back-roads riding, followed by indoor
pools, whirlpools, and famous PAW Happy hours waiting for you at your
motel, at the end of each day.
*The original Northwoods motel trip was
created by Pedal Across Wisconsin, and
has been often imitated, but never duplicated--except of course by PAW.
Join us as we cycle thru this magical land of birch, pine, and lakes.
Visit a logging museum. Swim in cool clear waters. Discover why the
spell of the Northwoods captures the souls of young and old alike. Explore
Nicolet National Forest where there are more lakes and trees than people.
...follow Dr. J's downhill routes to bakeries and ice cream... enjoy
indoor pools and whirlpools each night.... refuel at PAW's one of a
kind post ride "Happy Hour " and step up to terrific buffet
dinners and relax nightly as you take advantage of your luxurious surroundings.
Come see why so many veteran riders have said Heart Of Wisconsin Northwoods
is the best week long tour they have ever taken. Limit 90-120 riders.
Heart of Wisconsin Northwoods has became an annual event for some
of our riders

Sunday, July 25th Merrill to Rhinelander
…. 63 miles
Beautiful countryside and friendly towns start us on our journey. Enjoy
scenic back roads with photo-op views of the Wisconsin River as our route
takes us to the heart of the timberland and lakes region. Share experiences
with old friends and new at post ride happy hour and at dinner as we dine
in elegance at rustic Holiday Acres Resort. Overnight at Quality Inn of
Rhinelander which just happens to be right across the street from the
best ice cream stop on the tour.
Monday, July 26th Rhinelander to
Eagle River-- 60 miles
We wind our way North thru the woods and between the lakes into a never-never
land where the deer feed on chocolate plants and cyclists always have
tailwinds. Of course we have a destination.....who among us could have
guessed that we will soon be in Three Lakes and cruising North on RD.
X to the landmark boat lift? Then, it’s on to Eagle River where
a very nice property acquired by Days Inn will host us through Thursday.
Happy Hour before dinner at Riverstone, the finest in the Northwoods,
and you can bet Cindy has cooked up something special for PAW.
Tuesday, July 27th Loops
to Phelps and Land’O Lakes 40 or 60 miles
0 TO 60 IN TEN HOURS (OR LESS)
Swim, sleep, shop, canoe, or cycle through beautiful Northwoods country.
Click your derailleur three times. Yes, Dorothy, this must be bicycle
heaven!!
Those who ride will be rewarded with a day to remember. There's bound
to be Eagles soaring above the food stop on the lake at Phelps and again
to the North where we discover the source of the Wisconsin River. Crossing
the Michigan state line we head for Land 'O Lakes in search of better
butter, but settle for a little used blacktop bike path tucked away in
the woods. Our route takes us past lakes called home by loons and a rustic
store in the woods called home by ice cream lovers. Thoughts of PAW happy
hour propel us south to Eagle River.
Wednesday, July 28th Star Lake—Boulder
Junction 40 or 60 miles
Yet another photo-op loop thru bicycle heaven that you won't want to miss.
While there is always an opportunity to cut your miles, we predict that
on a day like this you won't want to turn back. The food stop on the lake
is an ideal half way point for 40 milers or a great place to gather a
bit more energy to go all the way to Boulder Junction for lunch. Eventually,
thoughts of dinner again at Riverstone will bend your handlebars to the
Southeast. But be warned, the last time we used this route ten people
mailed in their job resignations from the Boulder Junction Post Office.
And ten more called grandchildren to tell them they were sorry, but they
would not be coming home for awhile. Several more made stops at real estate
offices. You got it......this ain't Kansas, Dorothy............
Thursday, July 29th Nicolet Forest*,
Franklin Lake Beach and the boat lift - 45 or 63 miles.
This is one of the most scenic loops of the week newly arranged so everyone
can see Nicolet Forest without riding more miles than they would care
to. The beach in the forest makes a perfect destination no matter which
route you take. The stone shelter with dual fireplaces and the sand beach
must have been put there just for PAW riders to have a cookout. Don’t
look now, but there is already a line forming for Bubha’s better
burgers. This must be downtown bicycle heaven and your Tour Director sees
problems ahead getting people to head back to Eagle River. Perhaps a recruitment
of cycletroopers to find & fetch Bubha to set up happy hour will coax
us back. Pedal Across Wisconsin is an equal opportunity
provider * Pedal Across Wisconsin utilizes National Forest Land under
the terms of a special use permit with Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest.
Friday, July 30th Eagle
River to Rhinelander – 60 miles
Another photo-op ride as we head west to the food stop at the Lake Tomahawk
shelter. Then south for lunch where they already have the grill fired
up for us at Pine Ridge Country Club. From there it’s just a short
ride to Quality Inn of Rhinelander where a great dinner will be served
in their banquet room. Dr. J says we are returning so we can all be in
one motel for Happy Hour and not need a bus for dinner, but we all know
it’s really for the ice cream across the street…….
Saturday, July 31st
Rhinelander to Merrill – 55 miles
The week may come to an end, but remember, PAW rides never end as they
go on forever in our memories. Your car (frown) and end of the ride showers
and snacks (smile) await you in Merrill. The sign-up line for next years
trip forms to the right.
Note: exact miles and routes depend on road conditions for the 2010 season.
Also, the opening of any new bakery or ice cream shop & how far out
of the way it is.
